My scope of practice includes one to one therapeutic intervention for children from infancy through young adulthood. I provide therapy services to a varied caseload with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), sensory integration disorders, sensory processing differences, global delays in development, and learning differences and challenges. I also conduct workshops and training sessions for parents, caregivers, and teachers on various topics, using an occupational therapy lens on sensory processing differences, child development, emotional regulation, and self care skills development.
I possess a certification in sensory integration using the Ayres Sensory Integration theory. This lays the foundation for therapy which addresses the underlying factors that influence behavior and motor output. Additionally, I hold basic certification in DIR-Floortime, which is relationship-focused using play-based strategies. I compliment this model with my extensive training in the SCERTS Model, which stands for social communication, emotional regulation, and transactional support. Strength based in nature, each of these approaches recognizes the importance of the child’s sense of emotional regulation and feeling safe, These are essential components to development and the wellbeing of both parent and child. Building trust and establishing relationships with the child and their family lays the foundation for positive growth.
During the course of treatment areas addressed may include regulation, social communication, balance and coordination, motor planning, adaptive functioning in daily living tasks, fine motor, gross motor, and visual motor skill development. Play is the key ingredient for learning and is used as the primary modality in my therapy. By creating play-based activities that are meaningful with purpose, the child participation increases as there is motivation to engage and learn. Recognizing the parent is the expert, I aim to design opportunities based on your child’s strengths and interests, offering ‘just the right challenge’ to promote development advancement. Additional areas of parent/child support and intervention may include community re-integration; self-care, including toilet learning, sleep hygiene, mealtime engagement and expanding food repertoire; and academic readiness skills that includes executive function skills, handwriting remediation, and keyboarding.
